Times News: Community members recognized for volunteer efforts in Sullivan County

Two community members from Sullivan County were recognized at the 2023 Governor’s Volunteer Stars Awards earlier this month.

The ceremony in Franklin, Tennessee, is part of Volunteer Tennessee, an initiative that recognizes “outstanding volunteers from each of Tennessee’s 95 counties,” a recent news release states.

Liza Harmon was recognized for almost 40 years of volunteering with Meals on Wheels of Kingsport. Harmon has served as a driver, cook and board member for the organization.

She is the overall coordinator for the First Presbyterian Kitchen location for Meals on Wheels, where she oversees over 140 hot cooked meals being prepared every week, Monday through Friday.

Brylee Thomas was recognized for her volunteer service with The Dairy Alliance promoting dairy foods as part of a healthy diet. At 11 years old, she was also selected as the Dairy Alliance 2023 Chairman.

She has made appearances on local television, the 4th of July Parade and was a guest speaker at the Kingsport Rotary Club.

She volunteers with the 4-H Honor Club and Sullivan County Toy from Cops, the release states.
