United WE READ

A collaborative partnership model aimed at advancing the common good by raising visibility, deepening connections, and engaging supporters to build a literacy-rich community.

The most important metric for predicting success in education is 3rd grade reading proficiency. Until 3rd grade, children learn to read. After 3rd grade, children NEED to read to learn.

In 2013, approximately 54% of students in the Greater Kingsport area were reading on grade level at the end of 3rd grade. The vision of United WE READ is that all students will be reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade.

United WE READ is a community impact model built around six key elements aimed to raise visibility of the importance of early grade reading, deepen connections with organizations that are working to increase literacy among Kindergarten through 3rd graders, and engage supporters to build a literacy-rich community through volunteering, mentoring, and tutoring.
