WCYB - About 350 kids from eight different organizations across our region participated in the fourth annual kickoff for the United WE READ summer book club Tuesday.
Kindergarten through third graders were given an Olympic-themed book and a literary packet with different activities to help prevent the "summer slide.”
That is the term for when a child's mind is not engaged as much as it would be during the school year.
The kids were treated to Olympic-themed activities along with crafts and prizes.
“This is the first Olympics that the kids really remember so it’s fun that they get to read a book, learn about the olympics, learn about the different games, get to participate in a version of the games, javelin throw, discus throw, weight training, parachuting, rhythmic gymnastics, all different kinds of things today, Emily Merritt, the United WE READ manager, said.
All of the kids who participated received a book.
