A. United Way of Greater Kingsport routinely assesses the needs of the community by conducting a community needs assessment. If there are issues that arise from the assessment that are not currently being met by traditional agency programs, United Way convenes community partners to address the problems. United Way focuses on the underlying causes, not just quick fixes, in order to improve lives and build stronger communities.

A. United Way addresses most of the identified needs through the 41 programs funded through 28 member agencies. In addition to this traditional type of funding, United Way engages the community in creating lasting changes in people's lives.

A. During today's economic struggles, federal, state and local governments have made deeper cuts in funding to non-profit agencies. Many agencies face reductions or elimination of much needed funds. It is up to caring, community-minded people to maintain the services that support the health and well being of the greater Kingsport area.

Your contributions to the United Way of Greater Kingsport do make a difference. Making contributions through your local United Way is more effective than making a contribution to a single service agency. We fund a more comprehensive network of services and our trained volunteers assess and direct your donation to the greatest need. All donor information is handled with respect, confidentiality, and if desired, anonymity and we never sell, rent or trade our list of donors.

A. Giving is a personal decision based on your individual circumstances. As a guide, many salaried employees contribute from 1.5 to 3 percent of their annual salary. Hourly employees find that investing one hour to 1 1/2 hours pay per month is a simple yet effective way to help those in need.

A. Gifts should only be given willingly and voluntarily. You should never feel coerced to give. We are confident that when people see where their money is invested, they will want to contribute.

A. Some do and some don’t. Because agencies are not 100% funded by United Way, some find it necessary to charge fees to cover some costs. People are charged according to their ability to pay.
